Helpful Tips For Keeping Your Gutters Clean

Keeping our gutters clean is an essential part of home maintenance. Often we focus on keeping the interior of our house clean but forget the other chores outside our home. When raining, our gutter collects rainwater from the roof and carries it away into a drain. You would be surprised at the piles of leaves and debris clogging up your gutter if you don’t keep it clean. This will not allow the water to run off to the drain. It will fill the gutters and eventually pull the gutters loose.

We should keep in mind that having our gutters well-maintained prevents damage to our doors, walls and house foundations. This will actually save you from the headache of dealing with water damage and repairs to your foundation.

Read on for some helpful tips on maintaining gutters to protect your house from damage.

Helpful Tips For Keeping Your Gutters Clean

  1. Invest in gutter guards

Having gutter guards installed can make your cleaning a lot easier. You don’t have to scoop out debris, leaves and twigs clogging your gutter. There are a number of gutter guards available in the market today. These are made from a variety of materials including copper, aluminium, wire mesh, foam, plastic and nylon.

  1. Power wash your gutter with a hose

If you have a high-pressure water system at home, use it to clean your gutter. However, it is not advisable to use it for older gutters that are weak. It may cause your gutter to loosen and fall.

  1. Scoop out debris by hand

If you don’t have a high-pressure water system or power washing is not enough to clean out the clogged area, pull out the debris by hand instead. Wear clothes with long sleeves and rubber gloves when you do this to protect yourself from harmful insects and sharp objects in the gutters. Dump the stuff that you pull out from the gutter into a trashcan.

  1. Use a hose for flushing the gutters and downspouts

Rinsing your gutter with a hose will clean out the dirt residue. Inspect the water flow and make sure that the water comes out of the downspout. Otherwise, you will need to push out whatever is clogging it.

  1. Clean the gutter at least twice a year

Regular maintenance will help you minimise the work each time you clean your gutter. Also, it’s important to clean clogged gutters every after big storms.
